Is Social Media Killing Christianity?

Chris Cahill · 7 min read · First published 2024-05-04

A screen can help us reach someone—or make it easier to forget there is a person on the other side. This reflection considers how we carry faith into that space.

A place to begin

How has the rise of social media shaped the way we practice and perceive Christianity in the modern age? Is it possible that social media might be killing Christianity? Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have provided new avenues for Christians to connect, share their faith, and engage with others in ways that were not possible before. But has this done more harm than good?  By examining the effects of targeting algorithms, echo chambers, and confirmation bias, as well as the importance of unity, love, and grace in online interactions, we can gain a deeper understanding of how social media has influenced the way we engage with our faith and each other.

In recent years, the emergence of social media platforms has revolutionized the way in which Christians connect, share their faith, and engage with others. These platforms have provided new avenues for Christians to reach a larger audience with the Word of God by sharing sermons, devotions, and inspirational messages online. Many churches now livestream their services, allowing people from around the world to participate in worship and receive spiritual nourishment. Additionally, social media has enabled Christians to share Bible verses, prayers, and encouraging words with their online communities, encouraging a sense of togetherness and support.

Despite these positive aspects, social media has also exposed the flaws and shortcomings within the Christian community, leading to criticisms and challenges to traditional beliefs and practices. One of the ways social media affects Christianity is through the use of targeting algorithms. These algorithms work by analyzing a user's data, such as their likes, shares, and comments, to tailor the content they see on their feed. This process aims to show users more of what they are interested in, creating a personalized experience. While this can be beneficial in some ways, such as connecting users with like-minded individuals or providing relevant content, it can also lead to the creation of echo chambers.

Echo chambers are virtual spaces where individuals are exposed only to information that aligns with their existing beliefs or viewpoints. This can reinforce confirmation bias, which is the tendency to seek out information that confirms one's preconceptions while ignoring or dismissing contradictory evidence. In the context of Christianity, this means that believers may only see content that aligns with their specific denomination or interpretation of Scripture. As a result, they may become more entrenched in their beliefs and less willing to consider other perspectives.

From a psychological perspective, confirmation bias can have significant implications on how individuals perceive the world around them. It can lead to distorted thinking patterns, as individuals prioritize information that supports their beliefs and disregard anything that challenges them. This can create a sense of cognitive dissonance when faced with opposing views, causing individuals to become defensive or hostile towards those who hold different opinions.

It is also not uncommon to come across heated debates and arguments among individuals with differing beliefs. One of the most surprising aspects of these online confrontations is the fact that some of the most aggressive opponents of Christians are fellow believers who aggressively attack other believers over doctrinal nuances. This phenomenon raises the question: why do Christians, who are called to love one another and work together for the Kingdom of God, engage in such hostile behavior towards their own brothers and sisters in Christ?

First and foremost, it is important to acknowledge that Christians are not immune to disagreements and conflicts. Throughout history, the Christian Church has been divided by theological differences, resulting in numerous denominations and sects. While healthy debate and discussion can be beneficial in promoting a deeper understanding of the Bible and God's teachings, it is essential to remember that our primary purpose as Christians is to spread the message of Christ's love and salvation to the world.

Reading with care

One of the key principles that Christians should adhere to is found in Romans 14:3, which states, “Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him.” This verse reminds us that we are all part of the body of Christ, regardless of our individual beliefs and practices. Instead of criticizing and condemning each other, we should seek to build each other up and support one another in our walk with the Lord.

Furthermore, Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of unity among believers in John 17:20-23, where He prayed, “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me… that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” Jesus prayed for the unity of all believers so that the world may witness the love of God through their shared faith.

In addition to these biblical teachings, Christians are also reminded of the importance of showing grace and mercy to one another. In Colossians 3:13, we are instructed to “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” As recipients of God's unmerited grace and forgiveness, we should extend the same kindness and understanding to our fellow believers, even in times of disagreement.

Ultimately, every Christian should strive to reflect Christ's love and compassion on the world. Engaging in futile arguments and divisive behavior only tarnishes the Church's reputation and hinders its mission to spread the gospel. Instead of focusing on our differences, we should celebrate our unity in Christ and work together to further His Kingdom on earth.

Additionally, the Bible encourages Christians to focus on the core message of Christ's crucifixion rather than engaging in divisive arguments. In 1 Corinthians 1:10, Paul writes, “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” This passage underscores the need for Christians to prioritize unity and love over theological debates or personal disagreements.

Overall, In the age of social media, Christians have a unique opportunity to spread God's word and foster connections among believers. However, it is essential to be mindful of the potential pitfalls that come with the use of these platforms. So, can social media kill Christianity? Of course not. However, the adversary will do all he can to attack the Kingdom, and social media is no exception. He will create echo chambers and encourage confirmation bias.  He will advocate for division and hostility within the Christian community. He will lose in the end, but we should not make it easier for darkness to prevail. Therefore, as followers of Christ, it is crucial to approach social media with a spirit of unity and love, seeking to use it as a tool for advancing the Kingdom of God in a positive and impactful way.

Instead of using social media as a platform for arguments and division, we should focus on sharing Christian posts and pages that promote truth, love, unity, and grace. By engaging in meaningful conversations with others about their faith through personal testimonies and Biblical encouragement, we can create a space for mutual understanding and growth. Additionally, we can use social media as a platform for prayer and community building, encouraging a sense of fellowship and support among believers.

Carrying this into life

Embracing diversity of thought and understanding, we can leverage social media to strengthen our faith, advance the Kingdom of God, and cultivate a more inclusive and compassionate Christian community. By using these platforms as a tool for positive impact, we can overcome the challenges of echo chambers and confirmation bias and, instead, work towards building a community rooted in love and unity. Let us strive to use social media for God's good, spreading His love and message to all who engage with us online.

Let the reflection meet the next person you speak with. May wisdom help us listen, unity keep us open to one another, and grace become visible in the care we give.
