Faith, Science & Meaning

The Argument from Religious Experience

Chris Cahill · 3 min read · First published 2024-10-27

Some people understand an experience of God as a deeply personal reason for faith. The Argument from Religious Experience asks how such accounts should be understood. We can hear their significance without assuming that an experience settles the question for every listener.

Personally, a genuine supernatural experience with the Divine opened my heart to the reality of a God who desires a personal connection with each of us. This pivotal moment transformed my perspective, allowing me to move beyond mere intellectual debates about God's existence. As I reflect on my own journey, I see parallels with many influential figures who have similarly shifted from doubt to faith.

Living Examples

Consider the remarkable transformation of C.S. Lewis, a once-ardent atheist who became one of the most significant Christian writers of the 20th century. Initially, Lewis approached faith with skepticism, questioning the legitimacy of religious beliefs. However, through deep conversations with friends who held faith and introspection about his own desires, he underwent a profound conversion experience. He described this moment as a spiritual awakening, stating, "I was not seeking for joy, but for happiness, and I found both." For Lewis, it was not just logical debates that influenced him; it was a genuine encounter with the divine that reshaped his perception of life.

In a similar vein, Albert Einstein, the esteemed physicist known for his groundbreaking scientific achievements, often pondered the intersection of spirituality and the universe. While he did not adhere to conventional religious beliefs, Einstein expressed a deep sense of wonder when reflecting on the cosmos. He spoke of a “cosmic religion,” suggesting that the universe's mysteries hint at a higher intelligence. His insights reveal that even those grounded in science can be touched by experiences that transcend the physical realm, hinting at a connection to something greater.

Another intriguing case is Lee Strobel, a former investigative journalist and skeptic who initially aimed to disprove Christianity. Through meticulous research and interviews with various experts, Strobel encountered evidence that challenged his skepticism. Ultimately, it was his personal experiences and the powerful testimonies of others that led him to accept faith. In his book, The Case for Christ, he shares how the overwhelming evidence, coupled with transformative stories from believers, convinced him of the truth of Jesus Christ.

Carrying this into lifeConclusion

The Argument from Religious Experience emphasizes the profound impact that personal encounters with the Divine can have on an individual's perception of God. While skeptics may regard these experiences as mere emotional responses, for many, they represent powerful affirmations of God's presence. Such personal encounters often go beyond rational discourse, striking a chord within individuals and motivating them to pursue a deeper relationship with the Divine.

Throughout the Bible, we find numerous examples of individuals who had transformative encounters with God. Take Moses, who met God in the burning bush (Exodus 3), or Paul, whose life was irrevocably altered by his encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus (Acts 9). These moments not only reshaped their lives but also altered the trajectory of history itself.

In essence, the Argument from Religious Experience underscores that faith in God frequently arises from a profound personal connection rather than solely from intellectual deliberation. For those who have felt the touch of the Divine, the existence of God becomes an undeniable reality that influences their lives and inspires them to share their stories with others. As Psalm 34:8 beautifully states, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” This call to experience God encapsulates the essence of the Argument from Religious Experience: that a true relationship with the Creator is not only attainable but also transformative.

We can keep asking without turning the person across from us into an opponent. May wisdom deepen our attention, grace soften our conversation, and shared curiosity make room for understanding.
