Tithing and Love Offerings

Chris Cahill · 4 min read · First published 2024-10-27

Tithing can often be a challenge for new believers to embrace. It’s common to feel uncertain about how much to give, whether it's necessary, or how it fits into your financial life. However, understanding the biblical foundation for tithing and love offerings can help you see them as meaningful expressions of faith and gratitude. Here, we’ll explore the principles of giving, the difference between tithes and offerings, and why generosity is an essential part of our relationship with God.

Biblical Principles of Giving

The Bible teaches us that everything we have ultimately belongs to God. Psalm 24:1 states:

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.”

This verse serves as a reminder that we are stewards of what God has entrusted to us. Our finances, time, and talents are not just for our own benefit; they should also be used to serve others and further God’s kingdom. Giving is rooted in gratitude for all that God has done for us.

The Principle of Firstfruits

One key principle in biblical giving is the concept of firstfruits. Proverbs 3:9-10 encourages us:

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

This principle teaches us to give to God first, before we spend on ourselves. By doing so, we acknowledge His provision and place our trust in Him.

The Difference Between Tithes and Offerings

Understanding the distinction between tithes and offerings is crucial for your journey as a believer.

  1. Tithes: The term “tithe” means “tenth.” In the Old Testament, God commanded His people to give 10% of their income or harvest back to Him as an act of obedience and worship. Malachi 3:10 says:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

For today’s believers, 10% is not a command as much as a good starting point. Using the Old Testament as a model tithing is not just about the amount; it’s about the heart behind the gift and recognizing God as our provider.

  1. Offerings: Offerings are gifts given above and beyond the tithe. They can be designated for specific needs, missions, or special projects. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, we are reminded:

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Offerings provide an opportunity to express our love and gratitude to God while supporting various ministries and outreach efforts.

Why Giving is an Act of Worship

Giving is an act of worship because it reflects our love for God and our desire to participate in His work. In 1 Chronicles 29:14, King David expressed this sentiment:

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we could give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us!”

When we give, we acknowledge that all we have comes from God, responding with gratitude by returning a portion to Him.

A Heart of Worship

When we give with the right heart, it becomes a form of worship. Jesus taught in Matthew 6:21:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

By investing in God’s work, we align our hearts with His mission and priorities.

The Blessings of Generosity

God promises to bless those who give generously. In Luke 6:38, Jesus teaches:

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Generosity not only blesses others but also enriches our own lives, teaching us to rely on God and reinforcing our trust in His provision.

Abundant Blessings

In 2 Corinthians 9:8, Paul writes:

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

When we give, we position ourselves to receive God’s abundant blessings, enabling us to continue being a blessing to others.

Carrying this into lifeConclusion

Tithing and love offerings are important aspects of our faith. They reflect our gratitude for God’s provision, allow us to worship Him through our giving, and open the door for His blessings in our lives. As you consider how to incorporate giving into your life, remember that it is an act of worship that brings you closer to God and His purposes.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the abundant blessings You have poured into my life. Help me to understand the importance of tithing and love offerings as acts of worship. Teach me to give generously and cheerfully, recognizing that all I have comes from You. May my giving reflect my love for You and my desire to serve others. Lead me in my financial decisions and help me trust in Your provision.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

Let the reflection meet the next person you speak with. May wisdom help us listen, unity keep us open to one another, and grace become visible in the care we give.
