Why do Christians face trials?

Chris Cahill · 3 min read · First published 2024-10-27

"Why do Christians face trials?" It's a question that touches our hearts, especially when we find ourselves in the midst of pain, suffering, or uncertainty. To find answers, we will turn to Scripture and seek God’s wisdom on this profound topic.

1. Trials are a Part of Life

First, we must acknowledge that trials are a natural part of life for everyone, not just Christians. In John 16:33, Jesus reminds us, “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” This verse does not promise a life free from difficulties but rather acknowledges the reality of our fallen world. Trials affect everyone, but as believers, we have a different perspective.

2. Trials Strengthen Our Faith

One of the primary reasons Christians face trials is that they serve to strengthen our faith. James 1:2-4 tells us, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

When we encounter challenges, our faith is tested, and through perseverance, we grow stronger in our relationship with God. Trials can refine us like gold, purifying our character and drawing us closer to Christ.

3. Trials Teach Us Dependence on God

Trials also remind us of our dependence on God. In 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, the Apostle Paul shares his experience: “For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.”

When we face trials that seem insurmountable, we are forced to turn to God for strength and comfort. In our weakness, His power is made perfect (2 Corinthians 12:9).

4. Trials Prepare Us for Greater Purpose

Furthermore, trials can prepare us for greater purposes in God’s kingdom. Romans 5:3-5 states, “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Our struggles can equip us to help others who are going through similar hardships. God can use our experiences to bring comfort and hope to those in need.

5. Trials Remind Us of Our Eternal Hope

Finally, trials remind us of our eternal hope in Christ. In 1 Peter 1:6-7, we read, “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

As Christians, we are assured that our suffering is temporary, and it pales in comparison to the glory that awaits us. We look forward to a day when God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more pain or suffering (Revelation 21:4).

Carrying this into lifeConclusion

Read slowly, with room for another person to hear these words differently. May what we learn draw us toward a more patient conversation and a life more attentive to love.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the lessons we learn through trials. Help us to embrace our challenges and trust in Your goodness, knowing that You are with us every step of the way. May our faith grow stronger through each hardship, and may we be a source of comfort and hope to others.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

Let the reflection meet the next person you speak with. May wisdom help us listen, unity keep us open to one another, and grace become visible in the care we give.
