Finding Christ: The Key to Discovering Everything Else
By Pastor Chris Cahill · 2 minute read · First published 2024-04-29
Seeking Christ is not a shortcut around the hard parts of life. Ask what we are hoping to find—and whether our expectations leave room for more than comfort.
What are we actually looking for?
In a world fraught with uncertainty and turmoil, the words of C.S. Lewis offer another nugget of wisdom: "Look for Christ, and you will find him, and with him everything else." This profound statement encapsulates a timeless truth that transcends the complexities of life—a truth rooted in the promise of God's presence and provision.
Throughout Scripture, we find numerous verses that affirm the principle of seeking Christ above all else. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus Himself declares, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (NIV). This verse serves as a reminder that when we prioritize our relationship with Christ, He faithfully provides for all our needs.
Moreover, Proverbs 8:17 reminds us, "I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me" (NIV). The promise of encountering Christ is extended to all who earnestly seek Him with a sincere heart.
Look at the person reaching for Jesus
Consider the story of the woman with the issue of blood in the Gospel of Mark (Mark 5:25-34). For twelve long years, she suffered in silence, seeking relief from countless physicians but finding none. Yet, when she heard about Jesus and His healing power, she resolved to seek Him out. Despite the crowds pressing in around Him, she pressed through, reaching out in faith to touch the hem of His garment. In that moment, she found not only physical healing but also spiritual restoration and wholeness.
The woman’s story invites us to bring our need to Christ rather than hide it. It is a particular healing account, not permission to promise every reader the same outcome on demand. Seeking Christ is a relationship of trust, including when our circumstances remain hard.
Let seeking become a practice
Make room for Christ in the ordinary choices of today. Read, pray, listen, and offer care to someone nearby. Christian hope reaches deeper than getting everything we want. We can trust God’s provision while walking patiently with people whose prayers still hold unanswered pain.
